New Pattern: How to Knit The Sweetheart Scarf [Written Pattern + Video Tutorial]

Updated: Dec 31, 2023

Hello Super Crafties! This was a spur of the moment design that I came up with, one sleep deprived evening in October. It's a fun chunky knit that makes use of cables and slip stitches. I think it'd make for a nice gift plus, it only took me 3 days to complete! Thank you for supporting my pattern writing, let's dive in!

I've never been one to gush but as of late, the hopeless romantic in me has developed something

of a crush. The skeptic in me doesn't want to acknowledge it too much, and the giver in me is doing just that, with this scarf design.

I wanted to knit something for my puppy crush that says, "You're cool but if you don't feel the same, at least this isn't covered in hearts." And maybe I'm over thinking it 😅. I just hope he'll like it either way.

Regardless to how that goes, I really liked the flow of this pattern and so I typed it up for y'all. Hopefully, I'll remember this post and I'll put together the PDF file by February 2024 for the general public. I think it's also a good design for dudes in general because its not too over the top.

At the end of this blog, I'll share the cast on count if you decide to make this pattern with a worsted yarn instead; Just because y'all are super. 💖

Finishing Row: P2, K3, P5, K12, P5, K3, P2.

My original 60" scarf featured 22 repetitions of the 8 row repeat. I ended up with a total of 177 rows.

Additional Notes

  • 1 repetition on rows 2 - 9 measures 3".

  • Your standard scarf measures 60" long.

  • Medium scarves are roughly 70".

  • Long scarves are about 82" in length.

The width of this design when following the pattern exactly is 12".

These measurements should be considered for a product that is completed and blocked.

If you wanted to make this scarf pattern with a worsted yarn, the basic idea is that you'd be expanding the fabric that surrounds the 16 stitch cable section.

Originally, I mapped this pattern out for 42 stitches, which was too much for my size 6 yarn.

So in this new scenario, your cast on row would look like:

12 + 1 + 16 + 1 + 12 (42)

And your rows would look similar to:

Row 2: P2, *k1, sl 1 pw, k1, p2] x 2. P1. P2, k4, [2x2 RC], [2x2 LC], p2. P1. P2, *k1, sl 1 pw, k1, p2] x2.

Row 3: K2,* p3, k2] x 2. K1. K2, p12, k2. K1. *K2, p3] x 2, k2.

1 skein of LBY Wool Ease Thick & Quick = 8 repetitions + 2 rows. (18.5")

Idea: A Secret Pocket

Here's an additional bit if you end up with some extra yarn at the end of your project. If you've used a super bulky (6) yarn, the cable section is wide enough to store a phone. This is something I do quite frequently with cable projects. you can add a secret pocket on the inside of the scarf!

This definitely works better with heavier yarns than thinner ones because the pocket can actually support the weight of whatever you place inside. And given that this is a scarf, no one wants to be choked out while they're trying to stay warm.
